July 11, 2004: iTunes Hits 100 Million Songs Sold Mark

by Chris Seibold Jul 11, 2011

On July 11 Kevin Britten, a resident of Hays Kansas, did something wholly unremarkable, he downloaded a song from iTunes.

While downloading a song from iTunes requires very little effort Kevin was richly rewarded for his purchase of "Somersault (Dangermouse remix)." Not only did Kevin get the song, he also received a 17 inch PowerBook, 40 GB iPod and enough iTunes credit to buy 10,000 songs.

Why was Kevin so richly rewarded for his purchase? Turns out Kevin had purchased the 100 millionth song via the iTunes store. The milestone came a scant 15 months after Apple first started selling music. Kevin became the lucky customer on July 11, 2004.

  • Is that what you call “abuse of monopoly power”? It is what I call a great PR move and a CHEAP advertising medium for roughly $13 grand total from Apple’s bottom line.

    Way to go, Kevin!

  • Huh?  “abuse of monopoly power”?  Who claimed that?
